LCNS's Antibias StatementWe believe that human diversity enriches the care and education of young children and all those who touch their lives. Diversity in our community means a fully inclusive environment that is enhanced by persons of different races, genders, ethnicities, nationalities, languages, economic backgrounds,
ages, abilities, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, religious beliefs, and family structure. Our goal is to promote awareness and acceptance, affirm equity, and take action against bias in our community. We strive to respect and value the differences in each child and family in our community through all that we do. Respect for the school’s diverse community is reflected in the curriculum, classroom environment, parent/teacher/child interactions, professional development, hiring plans and program goals. Our anti-bias curriculum seeks to develop every child’s fullest potential by actively addressing issues of diversity and equity in the classroom. Specific goals of an anti-bias curriculum are: 1. Each child will demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride, and positive social identities. 2. Each child will express comfort and joy with human diversity; accurate language for human differences; and deep, caring human connections. 3. Each child will increasingly recognize unfairness, have language to describe unfairness, and understand that unfairness hurts. 4. Each child will demonstrate empowerment and the skills to act, with others and alone, against prejudice and/or discriminatory actions. (Derman-Sparks, and Olsen, 2020) |
