Our enrichment program - E.D.G.E. (Explore, Discover, Grow, Engage) focuses on helping 3 to 5 year old children achieve more than they ever thought they could. The main teaching principle at the heart of the E.D.G.E. is that children learn best through play. You might have heard it called Emergent Learning.
The exploratory nature of the E.D.G.E. program will help your children, regardless of their level, become eager, independent self-learners. E.D.G.E. is a limited enrollment program for children ages 3 to 5 years. It has a subtle structure that directs the children in their play towards learning the beginning concepts of science, written language, math, and design. E.D.G.E. focuses on science, arts, discovery, and language development.
The E.D.G.E. program includes:
• Excellent teacher to student ratio
• Jolly Phonics taught in a small group setting
• Age appropriate Science & Learning Experiments
• Fantastic Crafts & Art Projects
Developed as a preparatory course for, or a supplement to, the current Kindergarten Curriculum, Lakeshore’s E.D.G.E. program is an excellent way to prepare your child for school or to provide a boost of confidence to a child already enrolled. With a new subject bi-weekly, your child’s enthusiasm for knowledge will grow as the class engages in subjects such as our senses; life cycles (e.g. tadpoles); the sciences (e.g. magnets); and nature (e.g. wind, plants), through planned activities/experiments and hands on creative arts. Each week a new letter is introduced to the class and explored through song, sound, writing, and often crafts. In addition to this an array of concepts and ideas are brought about through play, circle time, group games and again songs. Some of these include: simple machines, patterns, counting, the senses, music and rhythm, the solar system, plant growth, and many others.
The E.D.G.E. program strives to not only introduce the children to the concept of structured learning, but to do so in a fun way that instills a love and excitement for learning and a confidence that they can carry forward as they graduate into the elementary school system. We believe that children learn through play. In E.D.G.E., as in our other programs, LCNS strives to provide a positive learning environment for your child that enhances his or her level of development.
Please note that E.D.G.E. is a non-participating class, and without the extra membership responsibilities. This means you are still a member of the LCNS co-operative, and are expected to attend our two yearly members meetings. However you are not responsible for duty days, fundraising, cleaning nights or taking a Board, Officer or Committee position. If you desire to get more involved though, you are always welcome to help out in any of those areas! Speak to a Teacher, who will get a Board member in touch with you.
